What is a word count tracker?

Fortelling's word count tracker shows your words per day, your goals, your streak and the date you'll finish at your current pace. Writing statistics show how much you write, how consistently you write and whether your pace gets you to your deadline. They update automatically, sync between web and mobile, and can be filtered by author and by book. Fortelling organizes them into four areas: writing progress and goals, team stats, your own writing, and plotting. Set daily and overall goals, a finish date and reminders, and the app does the counting.

How to keep track of your word count

Set a daily word goal and write: Fortelling counts every word for you and shows your progress, your streak and your finish date. These are the steps.

Step 1

Set your writing goals and schedule

Set a daily word goal, adjustable at any time, and choose which days you set aside to plot or write. Writing reminders give you a nudge back into your story especially useful if you get distracted easily.

Step 2

Import your manuscript

Already writing somewhere else? Import a DOCX or TXT file and Fortelling counts the words you have so far, so your statistics start from where you are, not from zero.

Step 3

Set a finish date

With a finish date you can calculate your required daily pace, estimated finish date.

Step 4

Track your progress

Open the statistics tab to see graphs and details of your overall progress. Set daily goals and an overall goal for the entire book, and filter by author or by book. Everything is synchronized between web and mobile.

Step 5

Build a writing habit with streaks

The app calculates your streak automatically from your logbook entries: your current streak, your longest streak, your total days and your weekly goal.

Step 6

Keep a writing log

The logbook is your personal narrative of the writing process, capturing the context behind the numbers. Open Statistics to add a daily entry, with a comment about your session. Co-authors can log their own progress, and the app combines it into a project-wide overview.

Questions about writing statistics

How many words is a novel?
Most adult novels land between 70,000 and 100,000 words. Fantasy and science fiction often run longer, around 100,000 to 115,000, and young adult novels shorter, at roughly 45,000 to 80,000. Pick the novel word count that fits your genre and set it as your overall goal in Fortelling: it tracks how close you are and the date you'll finish at your current pace.
Divide the words you still have to write by the writing days left before your deadline. 60,000 words over 120 writing days is 500 words a day. Set a finish date in Fortelling and it works this out for you, and shows the date you'll finish at your current pace.
Yes. Your goals and statistics are synchronized between the web and mobile devices, and Fortelling runs on Apple, Android, tablet and web.
Yes. Team stats show output and consistency across every author on a project, and you can filter the Progress section by author. Co-authors can also log their own progress in the logbook, and the app combines it into a project-wide overview.
